Hi, I’m Niranjana Rajalakshmi — a veterinarian-turned-science journalist.
A lifelong microbe enthusiast, I made the leap from veterinary practice to science storytelling during the stillness of the COVID-19 pandemic. That pause became a pivot, leading me to pursue formal training at New York University’s Science, Health & Environmental Reporting Program (SHERP).
While I enjoy exploring a wide range of science topics, I’m especially drawn to stories about animals, the environment, human and animal health, and conservation biology. My work has appeared in Scientific American, Slate, Mashable, Undark, Salon, Mongabay, Popular Science, and The Wire (India), among others.
I still miss my furry patients now and then — but they often find their way into my reporting in one form or another.
